Hornets inflict first league defeat on league leaders as Horsham bounce back with excellent win
Horsham will barely have forty-eight hours to put behind their disappointment of losing to Bath City in the FA Trophy, as we immediately turn our attentions to our Bostik League campaign.
Unbeaten in our last five league games (W4, D1), The Hornets have the chance to gain ground on their league rivals as we claw back the games we have in hand thanks to our cup exploits, but the visit of Greenwich Borough will no doubt be another difficult test for Dom Di Paola’s side, with the Kent club struggling in eighteenth position.
Despite having missed out on promotion in the play-offs for two seasons running following substantial investment, fortunes have shifted dramatically this season for The Cannons, who finished third and then fourth respectively in their last two campaigns. This season, things have been very different, they have won just three league fixtures out of twelve this campaign, yet they secured a first win since September two weekends ago when they convincingly thrashed Faversham Town 4-1 at the DGS Marine Stadium. They have however fared better in cup competition, ultimately losing out like ourselves did in the FA Trophy 3rd Qualifying Round on the weekend when they fell to a 3-0 loss away at Truro City. Despite the extra day to recover over ourselves, tiredness may possibly be a factor for both sides, and thus Di Paola may look to make some changes to his squad to alleviate any signs of fatigue.
The last meeting between the two sides ended up in a 0-2 loss to The Hornets in February of this year, however the reverse fixture was a more memorable affair for Horsham supporters when they surprisingly ran out 0-2 winners a year ago in November 2017 in a convincing display to stun the hosts as Joe Shelley and Scott Harris secured all three points.
We kick off at Culver Road at 7.30pm.
