Horsham suffered a derby day defeat in the festive fixture before Christmas, as high-flying Haywards Heath Town brushed aside Dom Di Paola’s Hornets side to draw level on points with The Hornets.

Goalless at the interval, it took just two minutes for Heath to break the deadlock, when Karly Akehurst nodded in from a wonderful cross from Callum Saunders. 2015/16 Player of the Season Joe Shelley was then dismissed for a second bookable offense just two minutes later as Horsham were forced to play the majority of the second half with ten men, but a dubious decision by referee John Pike allowed Heath to seal the win when he awarded a penalty with over twenty minutes to go, when he ruled Josh Pelling had fouled Kieran Rowe inside the box, despite Pelling clearly turning the ball away at his feet.

Saunders stepped up to send Pelling the wrong way from the spot as Horsham fans had to endure a Christmas gift they didn’t want.

Matt Dale’s report is now available to read, with photos from John Lines at the club’s Flickr Page.
