Horsham Football Club will start life in their new ground next season as members of the Bostik Premier Division after a gripping 2-1 win after extra time against Ashford United in the play-off final held at our last game at Culver Road.
Horsham had lead thanks to a thunderbolt from George Hayward, but had to go in at the break on level terms when Sam Corne drew level from the penalty spot in first half injury time.
Neither side were able to find a goal during the second half as the game came to life, and Horsham felt they had blown it with just over fifteen minutes to go when Rob O’Toole saw his penalty saved by Sam Mott who dived the right way after the former Burgess Hill Town and Shoreham man had been pulled to the ground by Jerald Aboagye.
However, in the second half of extra time, defender Dylan Merchant became the unlikely hero when he headed in from Joey Taylor’s freekick to win the game and confirm Horsham’s promotion as The Hornets signed off from their two year groundshare at Sussex HQ in style.
Matt Dale’s detailed summary of a historic night in Horsham’s modern history is now available to read at the match centre.
