“I promised I would get him on television!”
John Maggs pays tribute to late president
Chris Smith is out to prove he was no ‘one season wonder’ by committing himself to the Hornets for the 2019/2020 campaign. The former South Park marksman topped the Horsham goalscoring charts in his first season with the club, netting twenty-three times in forty-two appearances, and the news that he has agreed to spearhead the attack once again will be a terrific boost to manager Dom Di Paola as he prepares his squad for his first taste of Bostik League Premier Division football.
Fellow striker Rob O’Toole, who chipped in with nineteen goals of his own, has also agreed to remain along with the player with whom O’Toole shared the Supporters’ Player of the Season award – Harvey Sparks – and exciting wideman Lee Harding. Jack Brivio, who captained the side to promotion after the thrilling play-off final victory over Ashford United, will also be back as will midfield playmaker Charlie Harris, who is currently working his way back to full fitness having been sidelined through injury since January.
“I’m delighted by the guys’ commitment” said Di Paola. “I’d like everyone to stay, to be honest, because they all deserve a chance after how they played last season. Ideally I’d like to go with the squad we’ve got and add perhaps four players to it and I’m speaking to a number of potential signings at the moment. As a group, the lads get on so well together and really graft for each other but we know it’s going to be a hard ask, stepping up a level. We saw when we came up from the County League how we struggled at first so we’ve got to get things right in pre-season and get ourselves really fit for the challenge ahead.”
We will bring further player news as we have it.
