Horsham were made to work for their third successive pre-season victory against a well-organised Newhaven team that were dangerous on the break.
Goal-mouth action was at a premium in the first-half although Andy McCarthy, standing in for the holidaying Josh James in the Hornets’ goal, was forced into action to prevent the home side taking the lead. Despite their dominance in midfield The visitors only had a Darren Boswell shot to show for their midfield dominance before taking the lead in the forty-first minute. Rob O’Toole did the honours with a bullet header from Scott Kirkwood’s perfect corner. And the same player could have doubled his tally moments later when he fired goalwards from a Steve Metcalf pass only to be thwarted by the home keeper’s fine save.
H/T: Newhaven 0 Horsham 1
Dom Di Paola would have been less than impressed with his charges’ sloppy play after the break which saw Newhaven break through the defence to equalise. And there was an element of fortune about Horsham’s winner on fifty-seven minutes. Darren Budd released Metcalf on the right and his dangerous cross was deflected by a defender onto O’Toole’s head and into the net. There were six substitutions on the hour and the visitors were able to close out the match despite the odd scare or two.
